F&D Italian, Winter Park

F&D shipped their pizza oven in from Italy, which tells you how seriously they take the one thing everything else is built around. Wood fired, properly blistered, the kind of base that has some chew to it rather than going limp in the middle. We went to the Winter Park location.

The part worth planning around is the deals. There is something on almost every day of the week, and they are not token discounts. We went on a Wednesday and had the wood fired pizza for $12, which for an oven that came over on a boat is faintly ridiculous. Check what is running before you pick a night, because the difference between showing up on the right day and the wrong one is real money.

Tartini Pizzeria & Spaghetteria, Orlando

Tartini has a cheese wheel that cost $3,000, and they did not buy it to sit in a display case. It is the cooking vessel. The Pasta Alla Ruota is finished inside the hollowed-out wheel: the pasta goes in, brandy goes in, the brandy gets lit, and the whole thing is tossed against the warm interior until the cheese comes away and coats it.

It is dinner and a show, and unlike most dinner-and-a-show the food is the point rather than the excuse. Sit where you can see it happen. This is the dish to order if it is your first time, and the one to bring people to when you want the table to go quiet for a second.

Ask for a table with a view of the wheel. Watching it made is half of what you are paying for.

La Bella Luna, Baldwin Park

La Bella Luna has the advantage of where it is. Baldwin Park is built for walking, so a heavy Italian dinner does not have to end with rolling straight into the car. You eat, you walk it off around the neighbourhood, and the evening keeps going instead of stopping at the bill.

That makes it the best of the three for a date or for a long dinner with friends. The other two are destinations you drive to and drive home from. This one comes with somewhere to go afterwards, which quietly matters more than it sounds like it should.
